Josh Coulthard is a doctoral candidate in History based in the Department of History, Geography and Social Sciences at Edge Hill University and is also the co-convenor of the North West Medieval Studies Postgrad Network. His research focuses primarily on the political culture of the Insular Plantagenet World between 1200-1400, especially the ways in which the political cultures of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland intersected with one another.

He has a particular interest in the intersection between political legitimacy and identity, especially as this played out through an engagement with violence in medieval political culture and more specifically the colonial encounters of the Plantagenet state. Furthermore, he works with a range of administrative as well as literary material in Latin, Old French, Middle Welsh, Irish, Middle English and Early Scots in order to present a fuller picture of the political cultures of the Insular Plantagenet World.

He has published a number of articles in EPOCH, being featured in Issues 17, 2022 and 23 focusing on the Lanercost Chronicle, Petitionary CultureMedieval Irish and Welsh Literature, and Medieval Irish and Welsh Legal Manuscripts respectively.

He welcomes any submissions related to the Medieval World broadly defined, and is especially interested in any opening up historical source analysis to a broader audience.
